Making Money Cash

Ryan Gavin and Dean Hachamovitch, Marketing Guy and Engineer, respectively, for Internet Explorer, have announced that the final build and release of Internet Explorer 9 will indeed be at the party they’re throwing at South by Southwest in Texas on March 14th, 2011. They’ve decided to first announce this to their very favorite community at Channel9, a bunch of developers who are in love with the internet platform, and they’ve spoken here in a video at length what the browser will be able to do.

This browser has been in production for approximately a year, and now they’re going to release it, thanking profusely the community of developers who have stepped up to help them in making this a platform that has a chance at competing with the rest of the powerhouse browsers out in the market today. As you know, Internet Explorer

Hachamovitch will be doing a keynote at MIX 10 as well, showing off how the platform is rolling out, as a sort of “look what we did in a year” sort of thing. These two fellas sitting on the couch are super excited about this rollout and after saying what they came to say, they made sure to prompt Channel9 for what they call an “uncomfortable question.” What Channel9 decided to ask about was HTML5, to which they reply “WE’RE FOR IT!”

Of course the developer community knows this already, so the question is pressed, beyond what HTML5 can do for the everyday user, what does IE9 offer the fringe users who want features that not everyone will use? Hachamovitch replies with a sort of well, we DO do that, we’ve implemented things like Navigation Timing which “got 0% usage on the web,” he then going on to say that they’ve added items that don’t just come from developers who request things, they’ve essentially come up with elements that they and people at Yahoo, Google, and etc have spoken about behind the scenes, bringing these “fringe” features into IE9 at launch.

Essentially what they’re speaking about in this video and what will be coming with Internet Explorer 9 is depth as well as quality implementation of features. We’re hoping for the best!

Blogger Andrew Trench recently presented a theory on the threshold of when Internet penetration starts to matter, writing:

Social networks have also been given plenty of credit for the revolution unfolding in Egypt.

So I went and had a look at the numbers over on www.internetworldstats.com to see what they could tell us about these two scenarios. Well, fascinatingly, both Egypt and Tunisia have seen a massive growth in internet users and internet penetration over the last 10 years.

Both have now got internet penetration of over 20% and in Tunisia's case it was as high as 34%.

While it is clearly simplistic to over-state this factor and there must be many more drivers contributing to such a rapid political uprising, it is obviously a factor as evidenced by the Egyptian regime pulling the plug on the country's internet access to try and block the rising tide of revolt.

My back-of-napkin theory is this: that a rapid increase in internet penetration in a repressive regime does play an important role as it provides an unfettered channel of communication allowing disaffected citizens to share views - and more importantly - to rapidly organise and mobilise.

If Egypt and Tunisia are valid case studies, it looks like internet penetration of around 20% is the mark.

Geopolitics & Macroeconomics adds:

Internet penetration: Social networking sites were critical to sustaining the momentum in the recent protests. The internet penetration in Egypt is 16%. In Libya, it is a meagre 5% [1]. The unrest in Libya has thus far remained concentrated in regions that are geographically distant from the seat of ‘real' power (see more on this below). The dependence of momentum on internet communication is far greater in Libya than in Egypt where protests began in Cairo itself.

Taking the conversation to Pakistan, Sabene Saigol writes, on BrandRepublic:

Perhaps one reason for this is that we're still not that used to communicating via the ‘net - maybe we need greater broadband and internet penetration. Personally I think it is more to do with culture - while Pakistani internet users are savvy to using social media to connect with friends, I feel they have not yet ‘crossed over' to seeing SM as a means for professional communications - or even wider social communications that go beyond their immediate circle. Yes, there are no doubt savvy people - both within marketing and tech circles, and outside - however, these people are likely a tiny proportion of the total number of ‘net and social media users.

Donald Trump Will Win <b>News</b> Cycles With Birtherism [UPDATED]

The big 2012 news today is, naturally, pure malarkey from Donald Trump, who has inexplicably decided to base his reality-teevee campaign solely on birtherism. Here's Politico's Andy Barr:

I read an interesting article this morning that suggested Apple would change its mind and put Adobe’s Flash technology on its iOS devices within a year. I don’t think that’s going to happen.

In an open letter to users, Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave several reasons why he didn’t want Flash on the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. They are: Flash isn’t open; the full web; reliability, security and performance; battery life; and touch.

Adobe began shipping Flash Player 10.1 for Mobile last June, but even Laptop magazine admitted that “Steve Jobs was right,” and that “Adobe’s offering seems like it’s too little, too late.” Granted, that report was from six months ago, but it still doesn’t bode well for the technology.

There is no doubt that Adobe is making advances with Flash on mobile devices, but I don’t believe future changes will be enough to get Apple to adopt the technology.

Jobs has been very clear that Apple supports HTML5, an open technology that is controlled by a standards committee, not one company. By building support for that technology into Webkit, Apple is ensuring that mobile Web browsers will be able to access what we’ve come to know as the “full web.”

Webkit is used by Google, Palm, Nokia and RIM, so it has a pretty solid base.

One of the arguments often bantered about when the discussion of the “full Web” comes up is video. There is no doubt that Flash made huge strides over the years in having sites like YouTube encode their videos in Flash. But that’s for the desktop.

As Jobs points out, almost all of this video is also available in H.264 format (a format Flash also supports), so it’s viewable on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

“Add to this video from Vimeo, Netflix, Facebook, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ESPN, NPR, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, and many, many others. iPhone, iPod and iPad users aren’t missing much video,” wrote Jobs.

You may ask why other companies adopted Flash for their mobile devices when Apple won’t. That’s easy, they are looking for something they have that Apple doesn’t. Considering how hard it is for tablet makers to compete with Apple, any perceived advantage will work.

I’m not an Adobe hater—I know quite a few people that work at Adobe and I think they’ve done some amazing things over the years. Flash for mobile devices isn’t one of them.

Chris Dawson said he gives “Apple a year until they cave [and adopt Flash]. Android tablets will just be too cool and too useful for both entertainment and enterprise applications if they don’t.”

I have been using my iPhone for years and my iPad for one year. I honestly can’t remember the last time I went to a Web site that wouldn’t load because I didn’t have Flash installed. I can load videos from YouTube and a host of other sites too, no problem.

Apple has sold more than 160 million iOS devices and there are no screaming, angry hordes of users breaking down the doors at 1 Infinite Loop demanding Flash on their devices.

In order for Apple to change its mind and adopt Flash, the technology has to be proven to be indispensable and that it will benefit its users. Apple has proven just the opposite is true.

Resources

  • PT Sans Bold – FontSquirrel

  • Free App Icons for Developers – WebAppers

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document that is 1200 x 1200 pixels, 72 dpi, and RGB Color. Fill the layer with white. (Ctrl+Backspace or Delete)

Step 2

Now create a rectangle for the header and fill it with a white-grey color, then use the colors on the image for the “Gradient Overlay”. Our search and logo will eventually be part of the header.

Step 3

Create a new rectangle above the previous one, with attributes as shown below. The following drop shadow effect creates a look of a 1 pixel stroke which does increase the look of that simple bar. Note: this step creates a horizontal line.

Step 4

Now add the “Gradient Overlay” layer style with the hex codes indicated.

Step 5

Add a white 1 pixel stroke. The following stroke of 1 pixel will divide the grey shadow effect. It’ll eventually work as a divider.

Step 6

Make one more rectangle in the middle-right zone, and fill it with white and add a 1 px stroke as indicated – it will be our search box.

Step 7

One more rectangle should be created and filled with blue. Set the inner shadow as indicated below, this will be our search button. This blue works great in combination with grey, white and light-grey. Blue will be the major contrasting color we use as we work through this template.

Step 8

Add the Gradient Overlay details to the button with the details from image.

Step 9

Add a 1 px stroke to the button with the color indicated. Take a look at the first and the final result of the button so you can see the difference all these details made.

Step 10

Now add this drop shadow effect for the text placed in the search box, using PT Sans Bold. This will be the final step in creating your search button. You may want to try other fonts, but the PT Sans Bold is really good for this small button.

Step 11

Make another fill under the header section, this will be the navigation area. Here we will place the navigation links of our template.

Step 12

Write your navigation links using a dark-grey color, then add a white “drop shadow” effect. The effect used for the navigation links is the same used for the search button.

Step 13

With 1px vertical line, make divisions between each links. The lines should be black and will really increase the beauty of the navigation area.

Step 14

Over the home section, make a fill with the blue and then add a Gradient Overlay style as indicated.

Step 15

Copy the Home link, this time color it white and add a drop shadow effect.

Step 16

Create a big, grey zone under the navigation, it should be about 30% of the layout. This will be the background for the featured area.

Step 17

Now create a big, white rectangle and add some shadow with the details shown. A big stock image, a big headline and some text with another great button will be added.

Step 18

Add a any dummy image you want to that featured area. Be sure it covers more than 80% of the area. The one I chose is from a stock website.

Step 19

Add some text to it, use the PT SANS Bold font and make the font big.

Step 20

The remaining area should be filled with grey, in it we’ll place some text. This is really a secondary area which describes the image, the services, the company itself, or whatever you’d like.

Step 21

Place some blue-colored text which will be the title of the information below. Use the details in the image for Drop Shadow style.

Step 22

Add some dummy text. This could be some important information or whatever you’d like.

Step 23

Create another grey area under the featured zone, where we will add some text and icons later. Add the details as stated on the image. Mostly, the icons will promote the services offered by the company behind the website.

Step 24

Continue by adding a Gradient Overlay style for the last rectangle we have created in the anterior steps.

Step 25

Now we are adding titles and icons, as well as some divisions. The icons can be found in the resource list at the beginning of the tutorial. Be sure to choose your icons and text thoughtfully.

Step 26

At the border of both zones, create a small circle and fill it with dark brown color. Add some inner shadow as stated on the image.

Step 27

Continue by adding a drop shadow layer style. It is another small detail, but it really makes that button zone minimalistic, nice-looking and well designed.

Step 28

To finish, add a Gradient Overlay effect.

Step 29

By using the Custom Shape Tool (U), create an arrow in both circles. Now add the details shown on the screenshot.

Step 30

Continue by adding some Color Overlay for the arrow. It should also be a blue color because otherwise, it will not fit the contrast and the colors used on the whole template.

Step 31

Add a video screenshot in the free space and place a title for it. For this template, I have used a simple screenshot of a YouTube widget.

Step 32

Add the text “Product Highlights” and “Case Studies.” Let the text under the “Product Highlights” be links so you could showcase some friends’ websites or resources you admire/promote.

Step 33

Finish it by creating another form for e-mails, place all kind of other information, and whatever you’d like.

Step 34

Don’t forget to make a relevant/small footer for our template. If you have paid attention, you should know how to create the same effect as below.

All done! If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to drop a comment. I hope you enjoyed this whole tutorial!

Making Money Online Forum

Each day, Inc.'s reporters scour the Web for the most important and interesting news to entrepreneurs. Here's what we found today.

Twitter says no to IPO. The microblogging start-up has no plans to go public any time soon, said co-founder Biz Stone. Speaking at the Reuters World Economy and Future Forum today in Seoul, Stone said Twitter is making money and doesn't need more funding. "We are not even discussing it internally. It's too far off," he added, deflecting rumors of a potential deal with J.P. Morgan Chase. Industry tracker eMarketer reports Twitter made about $45 million from advertising in 2010, and could make as much as $150 million this year.

House votes to repeal 1099 provision. Lawmakers voted yesterday to kill an unpopular tax-reporting requirement affecting small-business owners. It's the first major change made to the sweeping health-care reform bill signed into law last year, according to The Wall Street Journal. The so-called 1099 provision would have required business owners to tell the IRS about far more of their business transactions, so that more money owed in taxes would be tracked in order to help pay for the health-care package. The measure came under fire from owners and business groups, who said "the onerous requirements it placed on smaller firms far outweighed any benefit to the Treasury."

Lending up, but not to small businesses. A recent report from the Federal Reserve shows a slight increase in bank lending this year. But the story isn't quite so rosy for small businesses, according to TheStreet.com. The Fed's Senior Loan Officer Survey shows that banks are keeping the same stringent lending standards they've used since the financial crisis. And they clearly think bigger is better, since nearly 20 percent of large banks surveyed had eased their credit standards for loans to large and middle-market firms. But only 10% had eased standards for small businesses.

Expand your social media presence on... LinkedIn? We hope most business owners understand the need for a social media presence these days. But Neal Schaffer, president of Windmills Marketing in Newport Beach, California, argues that most businesses don't pay enough attention to LinkedIn, the professional networking site, which he said is perfect for busintess-to-business marketing. "I am amazed at how many small businesses do not take full advantage of social media, which‚ as the Internet did two decades ago‚ allows any business to compete with larger, more established entities," he writes in BusinessWeek today. "What further amazes me is how few small businesses maximize their presence on LinkedIn and instead just follow the trend at Facebook and Twitter. Why would a niche business-to-business (B2B) company establish a Facebook fan page when their potential customers may not be social on Facebook but are already used to networking on LinkedIn? I'm confused."

This app's got a 360-degree view. Bubbli, a Silicon Valley start-up, gave a demonstration of its new app at this year's TED conference. The app allows you to take and view 360-degree photos, called bubbles. The images are similar to those on Google Streetview, and can even be embedded in HTML coding and viewed online. The New York Times reports that co-founders Ben Newhouse and Terrence McArdle scored $2 million in funding for the project.

What to Expect Whenever Getting a Roofer

When it comes time to repair or replace your homes roof, it's really a challenging task to find someone who is qualified to do the job. There are many roofers available, but the ones who will perform a great job for a reasonable price are not often easy to find. If you're in the marketplace for a service provider, make use of the tips beneath for meeting with as well as hiring the right one.

Job interview and Consultation

Interviewed part 1 by miriness

The majority of roofing contractors provide totally free consultations. This is especially important, since it provides them an opportunity to evaluate exactly what your roof requirements, also it provides you with a chance to evaluate them. As with all of businesses, believe in intuition concerning the individuals you let up on your roof. No issue how great the contractor's status or suggestion, he should begin by presenting you with a company greeting card. If the service provider arrives searching and speaking in an unprofessional method, most likely the job he's going to do will also be unprofessional. This is not to say that you should expect contractors to arrive within suits. They is going to be hiking on your roofing, so most is going to be dressed in denim jeans as well as work footwear or athletic shoes. If the service provider appears to be interested in talking upon his mobile phone while on your roof than he's in analyzing your own roof's requirements, that may be another indication that he's not the main one for the job. For the lawful protection, make sure that the actual contractor has sufficient liability insurance coverage.

Roof Assessment

Expect the service provider will be rising in your roofing. Actually, any kind of contractor who not need to increase in your roofing to judge the issue ought to be immediately discounted. Those who're serious about their own work will possibly create a drawing of your roof's surface and tag trouble spots onto it because they go through their evaluation, or they'll take pictures or video clip from the surface area while they are available online for. This is an extremely essential step, since it allows you to observe exactly what the problems are and understand how they'll be set.

Estimate

313 East 58th Street House by Emilio Guerra

The next phase would be the written estimate. The service provider will require away his loan calculator and are available track of an itemized estimation. Some contractors goes to their vehicle or even van and write down the actual proposal, while some will crunch the amounts to do the job in front of you. Once you're given the suggestion, make sure that you comprehend exactly which items is going to be utilized, just how long the job will take and when there are any additional or even concealed expenses that may arise during the repair of the roof. The service provider will be able to answer many of these concerns effortlessly and forewarn you of any extra costs that might be sustained if the roof's integrity be damaged inside.

After you have obtained a few written estimates from roofing contractors, evaluate exactly what each company or service provider would like to provide for the cost. Do not necessarily low cost the highest bet, simply because sometimes the highest bet will in reality be the service provider who does the job properly. Additionally, be skeptical associated with prices for bids that are significantly less than others. They might be using inferior items or be untruthful about the chance of concealed expenses. Above all, believe in intuition as well as go with the service provider that makes you feel most comfy regarding giving over your hard earned money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

If it were ever uncertain, info acquired through the whistleblower web site, Wikileaks, has verified Chinese language federal government fears more than it's ongoing control of the region this calls Xinjiang, also is referred to as Eastern Turkestan. The actual leaked out wires through U.Utes. diplomats show the actual degree to which Chinese language government bodies make an effort to convince governments globally to adopt it's position upon problems impacting Uyghurs. Most lighting of Chinese federal government stress would be the cables directed in order to Chinese frustration, or even the specter associated with Chinese ire, over the discharge of Uyghur detainees within Guantánamo to 3rd countries. A Dec Twenty nine, 2008 cable applies how Chinese Helper International Reverend Liu Jieyi fulfilled using the U.S. Ambassador in order to The far east to voice Beijing's powerful competitors of release in order to any kind of nation other than China, and that if the Ough.Utes. did certainly accede for this request it might "avoid harm to bilateral relationships and also to cooperation ‘in important areas'". In addition, the Feb '09 cable describes how the Chinese language Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the feasible discharge of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfavorable act toward us" along with a "slap in the face". That the Ough.S. federal government stood company within not liberating the detainees to The far east demonstrates the extent of the politicized nature from the Chinese judicial system. Genuine concerns over terrorism tend to be understandable, however in the actual U.Utes. government's observe the detainees would probably face torture and delivery if they came back to The far east

Chinese federal government stress in regard to the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees was not just applied to the Ough.Utes. federal government, but also to Brand new Zealand and a handful of Western governments that were considering resettlement. Albania, Germany and Finland, in addition to European Union member states all have the symptoms of borne the impact of Chinese federal government unhappiness. In the case of Indonesia, that was at first prepared to consider 2 Uyghurs upon solely humanitarian reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo instances were much less better than additional detainees due to the unwanted effects accepting Uyghurs would have upon relationships with The far east. A Might 8, 2009 cable relates how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer documented which Germany had informed China of the Ough.S. ask for to simply accept a few Uighur detainees held at Guantánamo coupled with already been consequently cautioned through The far east associated with ‘a large load on bilateral relations' in the event that Indonesia had been to simply accept any kind of detainees".

The diplomatic wires additionally talk about the actual unrest in Urumchi, the actual regional capital, within July 2009. A July 13, 2009 cable discussing mass occurrences in China says:

"Ethnic riots such as those in Xinjiang July 5-7 as well as in Tibet within 03 of 08 vary substantially in origin as well as character through bulk incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX stressed to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Each existing serious problems for the actual Celebration, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, but the Celebration leadership wouldn't hesitate to open fireplace on Uighurs or even Tibetans if they deemed it necessary to restore purchase. Mass occurrences pose a different type of risk, he said, since the management is ‘afraid' to fire upon Han rioters with regard to fear of causing huge public outrage that would turn from the Celebration."

This is a relaxing viewpoint, particularly when 1 views evidence offered by 50 percent reviews released this year by the Uyghur Individual Privileges Task (UHRP) as well as Amnesty International that detail eyewitness company accounts of the use of lethal live fireplace towards Uyghur protestors within July '09. In addition, the actual declaration which fireplace wouldn't be deployed towards Han Chinese protestors has resonances for the different strategy used through Chinese language protection causes in Urumchi to Han Chinese direct orders in Sept '09. Throughout those protests, then Celebration Assistant, Wang Lequan, tackled demonstrators, that experienced demanded he let them know about government responses in order to security concerns. An identical ask for to satisfy using the Party Secretary by Uyghur protesters within July was not fulfilled.

The actual broader repercussions of the unrest also noticed a brief dialogue about the effect it would have upon Iran-China relations, and on relationships with Sydney following Globe Uyghur Congress President, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke in the Nationwide Press Club in Canberra within August 2009. Within the latter case, china government "privately warn[ed] a significant Aussie bank that vendors the nation's Push Membership to make use of it's influence to bar the Kadeer talk there".

The U . s . States' concerns about the situation within the Uyghur area are available via within the cables. In a dialogue upon plan path within Tibet, U.S. authorities explain that it'll be not possible for Chinese language frontrunners to adopt a much softer collection "if they look like they are doing so under international pressure". The actual cable television dated April 16, 2008, 30 days following the episode associated with unrest within Tibetan areas, additionally relayed the actual observation "that household balance continues to be leadership's main concern most of all, which means there will ‘almost surely' end up being no relaxation from the present difficult collection upon Tibet or in locations such as Xinjiang." The information included in the cable television additionally sheds light on the extreme sensitivity with which the Chinese federal government views territorial integrity, and the feasible drip over associated with unrest from Tibet.

The chance of solutions to tensions in Tibet as well as Xinjiang as a result of municipal culture are debated inside a February 24, 08 cable. Whilst recommending that China's financial achievement will increase its resistance to democratic change, the cable television additionally discusses how Chinese leaders begin to see the effectiveness associated with "a restricted expansion associated with civil society, including improvements in the rule of law along with a stronger part for approved religions, NGOs, charities along with other stars within places that contribute to social stability and don't problem Communist Party rule." This is a significant change in thinking, that has seen U.S. officials market the idea that Chinese financial improvement, as well as economic relations with China will bring about a steadily democratic society; however, more belief seems to be put into a grassroots motion compared to one which begins from the best quantity of a Chinese federal government. Nonetheless, the cable television proves which "[i]n areas such as Tibet as well as Xinjiang, driving a car of separatism results in tighter limitations about the growth of civil society." This method can be regarded as counter-productive through the recognized, who suggests that the U.Utes. federal government "should still express...serious concerns over Beijing's individual rights record as well as attract China's growing consciousness which greater respect for individual privileges, spiritual freedom and also the guideline associated with regulation will serve to advertise the very improvement and social stability that The far east looks for as well as to enhance China's worldwide picture." This type of strategy might consider substantial diplomatic skills thinking about "China's weird concern the Usa secretly encourages regime alter as well as ‘separatists' in Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The wires provide insight into the actual daily business associated with diplomacy that is hardly ever afforded to the general public, which is interesting to note the amount of work carried out nowadays upon Uyghur issues. The importance of the part of the us like a keep track of associated with Uyghur individual privileges conditions in personal discussions is created obvious, as well as contrasts with its tactful open public stance. Employees of the Uyghur Individual Privileges Task is actually comfortable with the pressure china federal government puts on Uyghur activists; still, the facts of Chinese language government pressure upon it's alternatives is illustrative of the degree that Chinese officials attempt to suppress contrary narratives. With increased facts to come through Wikileaks, issues over Uyghurs might not get the actual headlines, but the cables possess get rid of brand new light on the documentation of individual rights conditions in the Uyghur area.

Islamic above all, the Uyghur people have a strong religious identification that, in particular, permitted them to preserve a strong difference towards the Chinese enemy. Indeed, the Uyghur Empire of Mongolia knew a amazing civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

While in their own background, the Uyghur People successively taken on Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before finally converting to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., thus opening the way to the Islamization of the entire Central Asia.

Under the effect of the religions which they taken on, Uyghur People used successively, and at times in a competing way, a great number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own unique graphic system.

The coming of Islam was a great change since it was supported by the absorption of the Uyghur areas in the enormous Turco-Mongolian and Islamic Empire. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan slowly replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used these days.

If their own writing, their own language and their religion mark a real difference with the culture of Chinese Han, Uyghur People also are different from their characteristic, so characteristic of Central Asia's people. A matt skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features pointing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek origins of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has included the proper identity of these remote people, though they represent only 9 million population - a little for this particular immense region. Therefore, the Uyghurs are now part of the fifty six ethnic minority groups having been recognized in an official way by China.

This particular law allows these people a few rights in a land where their difference is very often repressed. Thus, Uyghur families escape the "single child policy" and their language is recognized as the second official language in Xinjiang.

The integration of the Uyghur people and their culture in China, however, looks quite illusory. The presence of all-natural resources in Xinjiang, and its area with nations identified as very sensitive, strongly motivated the government to increase the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the higher responsibility jobs.

In reaction to this true will to assimilate the Uyghur people into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Asserting more flexibility, but especially the acceptance of their true identity, this movement was severely repressed by the power authorities in place Xinjiang.

The events of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghur peoples population continues today to proudly continue to keep their identification and their culture , despite the fact that they become a minority on their own territory.

It’s nearing two weeks since unions and their cohorts on the Left have thrown a nationwide fit over Scott Walker’s solution to what is ailing Wisconsin. Unions and Democrats have made Wisconsin their cause célèbre by deploying OFA astroturf, the big talking heads, as well as recruiting just about every known Grateful Dead concert attendee on their mailing lists into Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Democratic state senators (now humorously known as fleebaggers) comically continue to hold the state hostage over an issue of union power, politics and money—nothing more and nothing less.

Despite unions’ long hatred of Scott Walker, the new governor is moving to address both the symptoms of the disease and the disease itself—the public-sector union scheme that has molested Wisconsin’s taxpayers and their children by gaming the system. Unions like Wisconsin’s teachers’ union [WEAC] (which was Wisconsin’s biggest-spending lobby in 2009) have been extraordinarily adept at fixing the system through spending millions to elect politicians who, in turn, reward the unions at the expense of the taxpayers.

Now, in response to Walker’s proposals, the Left has gone overboard in their attempt to protect their stranglehold on Wisconsin taxpayers. Even though unions have made clear that their fight is not about their wages or benefits (they’ve offered concessions), they’ve made the fight all about their “right to be unionized” and the fictitious right to “collective bargaining”—which makes their cause even more despotic.

In making Madison into something reminiscent of the spectacle of the 1960s, unions, Democrats and their liberal cohorts are attempting to make the Wisconsin union battle into a civil rights battle, when it is not.  In fact, the Wisconsin fight, when compared to private-sector negotiations is about: 1) the Scope of Bargaining, 2) Union “Income” Security [Right-to-Work vs. Forced Dues], 3) whether Wisconsin should be the unions’ dues collection agency [payroll deduction of dues], and 4) whether public-sector unions should be ‘recertified’ by holding elections every year.

Contrary to the Left’s hyperbole, Scott Walker’s proposals do nothing to eliminate public-sector workers’ right to association, assemblage, or to petition their government. Even pretending that it is a “rights” issue is a mistake. There is nothing in the U.S. Constitution that requires a government to engage in a back and forth negotiation with a collective of workers. In a poignant piece entitled There is No Right to Collective Bargaining, Public Service Research Foundation President David Denholm summarizes the problem with the unions’ argument, stating:

A law granting public-sector unions monopoly bargaining privileges gives a union, a special interest group, two bites at the apple. First, it uses its political clout to elect public officials. Then it negotiates with the very same officials.

When you consider that between 70 and 80 percent of all local government expenditures are personnel costs, you begin to get an idea of the magnitude of the power such laws give unions.

Not only is there no right to collective bargaining in public employment, it is wrong. Collective bargaining distorts and corrupts democratic government.

Collective bargaining is a process for employer-employee relations that was designed for the private sector. This process served as the model for the development of public-sector collective bargaining without taking into account the fundamental differences between the two sectors.

As Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour explains:

“When they have collective bargaining in Wisconsin, on one side of the table there’s state employee unions or the local employee unions. On the other side of the table are politicians that they paid for the election of those politicians,” Barbour said. “Now, who represents the taxpayers in that negotiation? Well, actually, nobody.”

Even Newsweek’s Evan Thomas noted on Sunday [via Newsbusters]:

The Democrats really depend on these public employee unions in a lot of states for their support and for their political muscle, and public employee unions got a problem here. I want to distinguish between unions and public employee unions. Unions obviously are critical, but in the public sector, public employee unions have a pretty easy time getting a lot of benefits because nobody’s really pushing back all that hard.

Admittedly, Walker’s proposals are a threat to unions in several ways. As Walker’s proposals determine:

  1. The extent of what unions will be allowed to bargain about. Walker’s proposal limits bargaining to wages only, effectively eliminating the WEA Trust monopoly which gets its money from local school boards and runs it through a union-run insurance company.

  2. Whether unions can have workers fired for not paying union dues. According to its most recent financial record on file, WEAC (the teachers’ union) raked in over $25 million in 2009. Walker’s proposal makes paying union dues voluntary, as opposed to mandatory. This goes to the lifeblood of any union. If, for example, 20% of those teachers who are currently required to pay union dues as a condition of employment opt out, WEAC could lose up to $5 million a year in revenue. [It is noteworthy that, in the private-sector, the SEIU will be conducting its second strike at a Pennsylvania medical center over the issue of mandatory dues.]

  3. Whether the state will continue being the unions’ dues collector. Walker’s proposal eliminates’ the employers’ payroll deduction of union dues. Again, while it is commonplace for unions to negotiate payroll deduction, there is nothing anywhere (in private or public sector law) that states that it is an employers’ duty to be a union’s collection agency.

  4. Whether the unions will have to ‘re-certify’ every year to maintain representational status. Of all of Walker’s proposals, this seems to be one that could be considered a ‘throw away’ item in negotiations. If Walker’s other proposals get enacted, and union-represented employees feel that the union is worthless, they can initiate an election themselves every calendar under existing law [see Section 111.83(5)[h]] .

Given the ability of the unions and their co-conspirators on the Left to hijack the issue in Wisconsin over these last two weeks, there appears no way for a “win-win” compromise to be worked out. One side or the other will win. Either the unions and the Left, or taxpayers will prevail.

If the Left wins, all chances of reforming public-sector unions will be tossed aside by weak-kneed Republicans who will then be held hostage by temper-tantrum throwing Democrats (see Indiana for example). In addition, the Left has already painted the entire Republicans party with bulls eyes and has for years. Therefore, there is no reason for GOP governors like Scott Walker, Chris Christie and John Kasich to back down, which puts the Left in an untenable situation as well.

In the meantime, the disciples of Saul Alinsky will continue their prattle, attempting to convince America that the Battle of Wisconsin is something more than a fight over union power, politics and money…even though it’s not.
